Leadership Lessons From A Band

On June 21st, World Music Day, I was at Alliance Française watching my son’s band, Next Saturday, perform. The audience loved them, the energy in the room was electric, and the atmosphere was simply incredible.

But somewhere during the performance, I started watching the band members more closely. I began noticing how they interacted with one another.

Each musician was focused on their own instrument, yet each seemed equally aware of what everyone else was doing. Nobody was trying to outshine the others or compete for attention. Everyone was contributing to something much bigger than themselves.

It struck me that leadership isn’t all that different.

We often think leadership is about having the right answers, making the big decisions, or being the strongest voice in the room. Watching the band reminded me that sometimes it’s simply about listening well, creating space for others, and knowing when to step forward… and when to step back.

That’s when individual talent becomes collective performance. That’s when noise becomes music. And perhaps that’s where the real inner game of leadership begins.

Not by trying to control every voice around us, but by becoming more aware of our own. Because when we’re less consumed by our own thoughts, opinions, and reactions, we naturally become better at hearing everyone else’s.
