Today, we celebrate India’s Independence Day… a day that reminds us of the freedom we inherited and the sacrifices that made it possible.
But what does freedom mean in leadership?
It’s not just about how freely we lead. It’s also about creating an environment where the people around us feel free too… free to speak their minds, even when they disagree with us… free to ask questions without worrying about looking foolish… free to make mistakes without being afraid of what will happen next… and free to experiment, challenge the status quo, and bring their own ideas to the table.
And most importantly… free to be themselves.
I think that’s one of the responsibilities of leadership that we don’t talk about enough. The more secure we are within ourselves, the less threatened we feel by different opinions, independent thinking, or people who don’t always agree with us. And when we don’t feel the need to control everything around us, we create more space for others to grow.
As leaders, we have an opportunity to create a sense of freedom for the people we lead… to speak up, to question, to experiment, to make mistakes, to grow… and, eventually, to lead without needing us.
Because good leadership shouldn’t create dependence. It should create independence.
