Leadership Has Seasons Too

The gooseberry tree at home is full again.

A few weeks ago, it was just another tree in the background. And now suddenly, it’s impossible to miss… branches heavy with fruit, leaves barely visible in some places, the whole tree looking completely transformed.

But here’s the thing…

The gooseberries didn’t appear overnight.

There were months where nothing about the tree looked remarkable. No fruit. No obvious signs that anything was happening.

And that’s true for people and leadership too.

We tend to notice only the visible seasons… success, recognition, growth, momentum. The phases where everything seems to be working.

But those seasons are usually built on long stretches that looked ordinary from the outside.

Periods of learning.
Periods of uncertainty.
Periods where progress wasn’t obvious.

Trees cannot bear fruit every single day of the year. Similarly, leaders cannot show results all the time.

Leadership doesn’t move in one constant rhythm. Some seasons call for pushing forward. Others call for patience, recovery, reflection, or simply preparing for what comes next.

So the real challenge is to lead the season you’re in, not the one you wish for.
